This novel is drawn from his vast store of knowledge of American Freakdom and one of its outstanding citizens- Quintus Ells. Quintus Ells in the course of his 17th year sits down to write a letter to his unborn grandson; a map of what it was like to be that age a hundred years ago as a "priviledged member of a protected species," to lose his virginity, to set out on an African safari, to join the great drug experiment and discover its perils and its pleasures.
