Contains many medieval and later epitaphs collected by the author, from old City Churches, county histories, and from early works by Stow and John Weever. Many printed in old English script, various in Latin. Many notable people in history: 1310 Maude De Mortimer, Tilley, Essex ( Maud de Braose, Baroness Wigmore, heiress); 1376 Edward the Black Prince (from a rubbing in Caterbury Cathedral, written by himself); 1613, Sir James Pemberton, Knt. (Lord Mayor, London, 1612, Sheriff London 1602-03; 1649, Susanna Hall (Shakespeare) eldest child of William Shakespeare, etc. Stow (c. 1525–1605), English historian and antiquarian. John Weever (1576 - 1632), English poet and antiquary, Preston, Lancashire. A well known member of London's literary circle. Half title has penciled old epitaph by Mrs. Wills, whose husband was editor of The Norristown Herald. Facsimile of the earlliest epitaph, reduced in size, fold-out. Containing "Corrigenda et Notanda," Appendix, with epithaphs too late for insertion. Index. Verso of e.p. previous owners notes and dates. Blue cloth boards stamped with decorations, bold gilt title, lower board author in gilt. Stamped gilt title to spine, all edges red. Sunning of spine, title clear, bumping and fraying of spine ends. Mild rubbing of boards and extremities, rear stamped designs. Dark green end papers, small label removel scuff to edge of paste down, rear hinge staring.
