Historical fiction taking place in England during the reign of King Charles II. Mademoiselle de Beleau, born in France she fled with her parents in 1683 to England to avoid Frances persecution of the Protestants. Defoe's last novel, about a woman's fight for her and her children's survival, by living a life of sin as the mistress of wealthy powerful men. The fortunate mistress has many dark periods of misfortune, as Roxana relates her fall from middle class, to depths of trading her beauty and body to acquire great fortune with the only asses she has. Written in autobiographical form. Drawing illustrations by Andre' Dugo. Light brown linen boards over rich brown leather spine. Previous owners address label to pastedown, 2 by 1/2 inch. Spine and ends rubbed, gilt lettering and decorations still bright. Head and heal of spine chipped. TEG. All else cery clean, tightly bound. 318 pp, sm 8 vo. In protective film cover.
