Two full calf volumes of Restoration period Poet, Matthew Prior; 1664 - 1721. Well known for " Alma or the Progress of the Mind" (1715). Prior held various diplomatic posts, and in 1700 entered parliament with the Tories. He was Ambassador at Paris when he was recalled at the death of Queen Anne in 1715, and imprisoned for two years (at which time he composed "Alma"), a skeptical and humorous poem for which he is best known today. A folio edition of his work was published in 1719 and secured him a profit of 4000 guineas. He died in 7921 in Down Hall which he had purchased two years previously. At its best his work stands alongside Swift, and was admired by Samuel Johnson and William Cowper. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, where his monument may be seen in Poets Corner. Volume I begins with Prior's biography by Rev. J. Mitford. Gilt trim border, gilt decorations to panel spine, black title panel to spine with gilt lettering. Volume I title panel 3/4 inch rub, P missing. Marbled end papers & page edges. Inside board upper corner small lib plate with Old English letter B & no. 819. Remarkably clean text & solidly bound. Mild shelfware. tall 24 mo, 280, 343
