Paton's descriptions reflect his observations during his driving and walking tours of the: geography; climate; natives; nature and wild life; people he meets; historical sites; island life; farming (plantations, Cocoa, Bread-fruit). Although his views of native peoples reflect the bigotry of the 19th century, (desciptions titled "Irish Darkies"; A Cooly Doctor-shop; the future of the Cooly and Negro Races; Diving Darkies, etc.); the illustrations are profuse and provide a diverse cross section of 19th century life and geography in the Caribbean. Illustrations are from drawings of Milton J. Burns; 15 full page photographic type drawings; 53 illustrations in the text, including head and tailpieces & maps. Maroon cloth boards and spine, bright gild title panel and lettering to front board, gilt to spine, mildly faded, 1 inch black stain to spine, spine ends rubbed and bumped, rear board lateral fade area, few rub marks. Decorative old name plate to pastedown, lower edge of each side of plate has 1/2 inch tape stain, few soil marks to f.e.p., mild bubbling of cloth to lower left corner, noticable only at angle. Clean text, tightly bound. 8 vo, 301 pp In protective polyester archival wraps.
