Advised in his early career that his short stories were not profitable and the genre of travel and adventure narratives was; Poe told this story in the first person as though based on a journal. The adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym, a young New England man who stows away on the American Whaling Ship Grampus, on route to the South Seas. A tale of mutiny, shipwreck, capture, suffering, South Sea islands, incredible adventure and discovery. Although set in the character of a sea adventure, Poe immerses the story and characters in his macabre imagination of mysterious fantasy and horror. Illustrated with woodcuts by Rene Clarke. Black boards, 1/4 tan spine, toned, mild rubbing of extremities. Firmly bound, no inscriptions or writing. 267 pp, 4 to. Lacking slipcase.
