Over 90 illustrations by Thornton Oakley (1881- 1953), a student of Howard Pyle, founder of the Brandywine School. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Oakley graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in architecture. He then studied at Pyle's school in Wilmington, Delaware. Oakley is well-known for his six 12-foot murals which he painted for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Oakley illustrated numerous books and magazines, including Harper's, Century Magazine, Collier's Weekly, and Everybody's Magazine. Dark blue cloth boards and spine, bright gilt title to front board, gilt mildy dulled to spine, upper spine end closed tear, mild fraying. Spine has the letter A in black. Blue end papers illustrated with Sketch-Map of Brittany, showing routes taken by the Author and Artist. Very clean, solidly bound. No inscriptions or writing. First Printing. 8 vo, 437 pp
