Charles Egbert Craddock, 1850-1922 (pseud. Murfree, Mary Noailles), American author (great-granddaughter of Col. Hardy Murfree). Crippled in childhood, she was schooled in Nashville and Philadelphia and spent her summers in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, where she came to know the mountain people, and their culture which influenced her most prominent works. Many stories first appeared in The Atlantic Monthly; it was not revealed that she was a woman until 1885, after the publication of this novel. Murfree combines the beautiful romantic landscape of the mountains along with a realistic rendering of the people and their dialect. Brown cloth illustrated, with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Upper spine end has few chips, lower bumped and rubbed, clean clear text, no inscriptions, tightly bound. Top stain brown with rubbed spots. 322 pp, with 35 pages of ads, sm 8 vo.
