Graham Greene's autobiography is a fascinating work of self examination. From his childhood, and youth as a writer he reveals the conscious and unconcious elements that formed his style and provided material for his novels. The child of an intellectual Edwardian family (his father a headmaster and scholar; his years at Oxford; his involvment with the Secret Service (foreshadowing a lifelong interest in the grubby realities behind the facade of espionage); his apprenticeship as a journalist and his early years as a writer. In his own words, ''I have preferred to finish this essay with the years of failure which followed the acceptance of my first novel.'' Black cloth boards and spine. Quite mild mannered Henry Pulling a retired bank manager; whose hobby is raising Dahlias meets his Aunt Augusta (and her black lover Wordworth) at his mother's funeral. Eccentric and energetic Aunt Augusta involves him in her strange, hedonistic world. One more suited to a young person that a woman in her 80's. A lively funny adventure as they travel first to Istanbul on the Orient Express, becoming involved with drugs and currency smugglers. Green cloth boards and spine, silver lettering to spine. DJ not price clipped, lavender, illustrated, blue spine. Upper spine ends few small chips, lower edge front flap was bent, edge of rear flap same. All else, very clean, tightly bound. In protective mylar. Very good copy of this charming comedy that became a movie, directed by George Cukor, starring, Maggie Smith - Aunt Augusta, Alec McCowen - Henry Pulling, Louis Gossett Jr. - Wordsworth. sm 8 vo, 225 pages
