MOWAT, FARLEY. THE DESPERATE PEOPLE Land of the Ihalmiut Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1959. First edition Cloth Fine in Very Good DJ The second of two books (The People of the Deer) about the inland Eskimos of Keewatin District in the Canadian Northwest Territories. In June 1947 Farley Mowat landed his twin-engined plane in the immense, remote plain of northern Canada. Over the next two years he became friends with Ihalmiut; forty-nine survivors of a tribe which once numbered in the thousand. On his next visit in 1958, a handful of the tribe remained; confused, despairing peopple deported from their own land, ignorant and apatetic as to their future. The title of the book was not meant as a reflection of these remaining people, but of their slow, painful, and tragic extinction. The author begins with a short histoy of the Eskimo peoples from their first appearance in Canada. Mowat continues his focus to the 20th century and the growth contact between white man and Eskimo, accompanied by disease, diminishing caribout herds, and starvation. His narrative pinpoints various individuals and their sufferings. A tale of a once beautiful, spiritual people, who lived by the nature. Illustrated with wonderfully detailed wood-cuts by Rosemary Kilbourn.
