Lillian Hellman, (b.) New Orleans, (1905-1984). Hellman was a leading American playwright, author and political activist of her time. Her works included: The Children's Hour (1934); The Little Foxes (1939); Toys in the Attic 1960; The Chase, 1966; Pentimento, 1973, (film, Julia); Scoundrel Time,1976, and numerous other succesful works. Blacklisted from the late 1940s early 1960's for refusing to testify before the House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities. Wright's bio. is a thoroughly researched study of Hellman's life from her Southern childhood, influenced by an array of eccentric relatives; along with interviews of more than 150 people who played a part in her life; abundant, vital literary career; passionate sympathy and committment towards radical politcs, and turbulent personal life, which included a long term relationship with writer Dashiell Hammett. Wright offers a critical yet warm hearted account of Hellman's powerful and unique life. Eight page black and white photo section.
