Quentin Durward, set in fifteenth-century France, was Scott's first fictional venture onto the continent of Europe. The plot centres on the rivalry between Louis XI of France and Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. Reading copy, illustrations pages 224, 246 remain all others missing. Title page & frontispiece missing. Page 229 cut at joint, text intact, closed tear to lower edge. All text complete & in very good condition, binding firm. Black cloth boards & spine, mottled staining, small tear near rear spine edge, color pastedown, mild wear. illustrated end papers. Few pages loose in binding. tall 8 vo, 422 pages

Sir Walter Scott, (b)Scotland (1771 - 1832), the most famous and prestigious novelist of his age, a pioneer in the art of the historical novel. His special interest was Scotland's history and culture. Eight full novels illustrated: Vol. I, Waverly and Guy Mannering; Vol. II, The Antiquary, Old Mortality, Vol. III, The Black Dwarf, Ivanhoe, The Heart of Mid-Lothian; Vol. IV, Rob Roy; A Legend of Montrose, The Bride of Lammermoor, The Monastery; Vol. VI, The Fortunes of Nigel, Quentian Durward (fifteenth-century France, was Scott's first fictional venture onto the continent of Europe), St. Roman's Well (1/2 inch tear to lower spine); Vol. VIII, The Talisman, The Two Droves, My Aunt Margarets Mirror, Death of Laird's Jock, Woodstock, Count Robert of Paris; Vol. IX, Perevil of the Peak, Regauntlet, The Betrothed (frontispiece and title page loose, but attached) Vol. VII, Anne of Geirstein, The Fair Maid of Perth, The Surgeons Daughter, with notes. Each volume with frontispiece, illustrated throughout with notes to various stories. Green cloth boards and spine, blind stamped gilt decorations and crest. Gilt faded to some areas of various volumes, all spines gilt is faded. Spine ends rubbed, mild fraying, few hinges cracked. Text toned. All solidly bound, red inked page edges, clean, no inscriptions, two volumes have old number sticker to front pastedown. sm 4 to's, ranging from 400 to 600 pages each. Circa late 1880's. Eight historic tales of adventure, chivalry, rebellion, romance, and treachery.
