SCHECHNER, RICHARD. PUBLIC DOMAIN: ESSAYS ON THE THEATRE. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1969. First printing Cloth Very Good in Very Good DJ The first published collection of Schechner's writing. It opens with a consignment to history of the Stanislavski method of acting, and proceeds through an exposition of the structures and operations of regional and foundation supported theory and criticism, combining two seperate previous pieces with extensive new material. Three essays follow: on classical theatre (Euripides' The Bacchae), absurdist theatre (Samuel Beckett and Godot), an ensamble/transformational theatre (Megan Terry). A polemic on pornography and the new expression precedes Schechner's plunge into the theatre closest to his heart: environmental theatre; a piece on happenings. Followed by two essays on environmental and radical theatre essays, through which the line toward ritualized communal theatre of the Sixities is traced, via the influences of Antonin Artaud, Jerzy Grotowski, Joseph Chaikin, Julian Beck, and Schechner himself. The last essay is a piece called "The Politics of Ectasy".
