A Victorian novel of romance, misunderstandings, and accidents of circumstance. "How strangely influential are the accidents of life, the circumstance that seems at the time so small". Interesting and lively characters.Taking place between New York, Philadelphia and on a Steamer Mitchell S. Weir, was a well know Philadephia physician at age 50, embarked on a serious literary career. He wrote poetry and several novels, including In War Time (1882), Roland Blake (1886), Hugh Wynne (1896), Dr. North and his Friends (1900), , Constance Trescott (1905), and Westways (1913). Mitchell was also founder and 1st. President of the American Neurological Society.
Decorative first chapter letter. Maroon cloth boards & spine, bright gilt lettering and Art Noveau gilt title pane to front board, bump to upper edge, faded gilt to spine. Few rub spots to boards. S. Weir Mitchell (1829-1914), Philadelphia, well known American physician (Neurologist) and author. A novel of a group of people in Canada. Green cloth boards, stamped with raised decorative pattern, gilt title panel and authors name. Spine gilt title panel, moderately darkened, spine ends bumped, and rubbed. Previous owners name and address to pastedown. Faded purplish stamp to pastedown and f.e.p., prelim and half title have pale damp stain in same shape and place as stamp. Verso of frontis (S, Weir Mitchel) has a indentation, faintly to frontispiece, going on to title page 1 1/2 inch, getting fainter to dedication page and 2nd half title prior to text. Second gathering starting to pull. Mild foxing to random pages. Text overall clean, solidly bound. TEG. First Edition, BAL 14160. 419 pp., sm 8vo. In protective archival polyester film wraps.
