1 PURDY, JAMES. EUSTACE CHISHOLM AND THE WORKS.
New York: Farar, Straus, & Giroux, 1967. First edition Cloth Fine in Near Fine DJ
Purdy's fifth novel; in November 2005, the Mercantile Library awarded him the Clifton Fadiman Award for Excellence in Fiction, for this ground-breaking novel. Set in Chicago during the late depression era of the mid thirties, his theme is 'love' in it's most unpredictable, unexpected and incredible forms. The Works, are a group of Americans displaced by economic distress from the small towns and rural areas they grew up. They gather around the run down flat on 55th street owned by Ace Chisholm, who knows everything to know about them. An interesting mix of society: Amos Ratcliffe, his University fellowship terminated, and he is too young for relief; Clayton Harms, an electric sign salesman; Carla, Eustace's runaway wife; Daniel Haws, who runs his rooming house like a staff sergeant; Reuben Masterson, heir to milions; his imperious and surprised grandmother; Maureen O'Dell, a painter; and Dr. Beaufort Vance, an abortionist.. A novel which explores every aspect of love, including early homosexual themes, as history moves from the depression toward the looming disaster of war, and the characters continue to search for love in an increasingly indifferent, and loveless world. James Purdy, Born in Ohio on July 17, 1923: noted American novelist, short story-writer, poet, playwrite, and amateur artist. He is highly regarded as one the great living writers of post-World War II American literature.
