McCosh's treatise on the psychological influences on the elements a persons Emotions, Conscience and Will, affecting their motivation. McCosh's theories were in the tradition of Scottish common-sense philosophers McCosh, James (1811-1894), eleventh president of Princeton, took office in 1868. He was also a teaching president, with regular classes in the history of philosophy and in psychology. When Darwin's Origin of Species threatened to overturn age-old beliefs in God's creation and government of the world, McCosh ``stood out almost alone'' among American clergymen in defending evolutionary doctrine, insisting that the Darwinian hypothesis, fdoes not deny the existence of God, it only served``to increase the wonder and mystery of the process of creation.'' Green cloth boards and spine, gilt title to front board and spine. Spine ands rubbed, small chips, mild fraying. Beveled edges, corners rubbed. Title page, and first page of contents have a 1/2 inch closed tear at gutter, rear hinge partially cracked, Rubbing and mild soil of front and rear boards. Small ding to front and rear board edge. Pg. 150-151 hinge are top, brown stain from page marker. Brown end papers, previous owners name in pencil, and pale stamped owners name to f.e.p. Clean text, tightly bound. First Edition.
