Hume, Kathryn The Owl and The Nightingale: The Poem and Its Critics Inscribed Toronto University of Toronto Press 1975 First Edition, Inscribed Cloth Near Fine Inscribed to the title page: for Bob Lumiansky with gratitude and best wishers, Kit Hume. First Edition. The Owl and the Nightingale, thought to have been writted in the 11th or 12th century, a poem written in Middle English. It details a debate between an owl and a nightingale, overheard by the poem's narrator. With two surviving manuscripts, the author, and exact date are unknown. Scholars have long debated it's source, and date, dialect and interpretive matters, which cover a diverse range of subjects, including: religion, marriage, toilet manners, and song. Hume's principal object is to discover what is and what is not valid and useful in explaining the form and import of the poem, and then to apply what has been learned. In Chapter I she presents a brief survey of of the problems of text, date, and authorship, Chapter II, tests the viability of bird lore and the avian nature of the protagonists as bases for reading the work, etc. Brown cloth boards, deep brown lettering and illustration to front board.
