WHITE, THEODORE H. BREACH OF FAITH, THE FALL OF RICHARD NIXON. New York: Antheneum Publishers/Reader's Digest Press, 1975. First edition Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dj A well researched account of the last days of Richard Nixon in the White House. Tracing politcal history back twenty years before (1955), when Politics of Manipulation were born. How the Nixon team hardened through the years of struggle with the liberals into professionals who saw politics as a war; and the White House the command post, with no rules and unrestrained power. White reveals the tangle of episodes which fascinated and confused some of the American public for two years. How and why were the famous tapes conceived? Why were they not destroyed? What motivated the self-righteous men about Nixon an how did they, step by step, glide across the law and enlist the hustlers, spies and thugs of the underground? White goes on to relate how the details became public and how American politics responded, and how press, court, Congress moved, each in its own way, to develop from the story of a bungled burglary an examination of what Americans believe about themselves, about the power of government and the limits that must be set on that power, (lessons obviously now forgotten during the Bush adminstration). White does give credit to Nixon for his achievements as President and peacemaker, and also explains how he betrayed, his Presidential victory by breaking faith, as much with those who voted for him as with those who voted against. Theodore H. White: Journalist, Correspondent, Author; recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, The Making of the President, 1960.
