This beautifull illustrated book explores the purpose and function of the whole range of Botanical Art, from early woodcut herbals and painted florilegia, botantical treatieses and records of new discoveries, to gardening manuals, seed catalogues with field guides for the amateur enthusiast. The information was procured from the superb archive of the botanical material in the Victoria and Albert Museum, much of it hereto unpublished. Ranging from 15th century printed books to the work of contemporary illustrators. Also containing unique florilegia, the work of acknowledged masters such as Ehret and Redoute', with works from China and Japan. A indepth study rich in the complex history of flowering plants. With 101 illustrations color and half-tone (mostly color: from 'Floral Magazine,' Fancy Pansies, 1872, hand coloured lithograph, and Single varities of Chinese primula, 1872; Opium Poppy (Papaver somniferum), Pierre-Joseph Redoute', 1827, Colour stipple engraving, Plate 64 from Choixdes Plus Belles Fleurs, Paris; Parrot tulip, 1744, Georg Dionysius Ehret, Watercolour and bodycolour on vellum; Class III.Triandria, Johann Gesner, Table 4 Tabulae Phytographicae, Engraving handcoloured; (1795-1804), much more. Gray cloth boards, bright gilt title to spine. DW illustrated in color (Paeonies, Plate from the Nassau Florilegium c. 1650-70 by Johann Jakob Walther; rear DW, Violet, Plate from Herbier de la France, Paris, 1780-95 by Pierre Bulliard. In shrink wrap, unopened. Illustrated end papers. Most likely a First Edition. Tall sq. 8 vo, 152 pp. The Author Gill Saunders at the time was the Curator in the collection of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the Victoria and Albert Museum
