Elbert Green Hubbard, (b) 1856 in Bloomington, Ill.; American publisher, writer, philosopher, founder of Roycroft Press, who helped fuel the Arts and Craft movement formed by William Morris. In addition to his many writings from his creatively homespun philosophy, Hubbard lent himself to biography; historical and travel essays. His lecture tours were most admired by those in literary and art circles who were among the "free thinkers" of this period or the (19th Century group )Transcendentalists. Elbert Hubbard and his wife died on May 7, 1915, when aboard the Lusitania, which was sunk by a German submarine.
