Philadelphia in 1965, Clarise her husband Finch and their three daughters are living the dream life of a black financially privileged family. When Finch's lucrative catering business falls apart, Clarise suffers a breakdown. Their children are placed in a working class, political active African American home. A tension permeates the relationship between Mae and her daughter Ramona, hostility between them borders, on abuse. The painful secret which separates mother and daughter is confronted once the three fostered girls have left. The author's love of her home town, Philadelphia adds to this atmospheric story whose lively characters add a strange humor to this tale of family, loss and healing. When a city proposal threatens the community, Noon finds herself the leader in this struggle to save her home and family.
