There have been many accounts of the Lincoln papers; however, David Mearns has written the most complete and authentic account.. Volume I: three illustrations, the Frontispiece, Lincoln, as he appeared shortly before his inauguration; President Lincoln reviewing A Parade on Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, in 1861; A Textbook Which Lincoln Studied - Ann Rutledge's Copy of Samuel Kirkham's English Grammar. Volume II: seven illustrations: Frontispiece, Lincoln on Horseback, a pencil sketch by Waud; Troops On The South Grounds of The White House; Lincoln's First Inauguration; The Unfinished Dome of the Capitol of the United States as It Appeared in 1861; A Confederate "Bull Battery," In The Early Summer of 1861; The Lexington of 1861, or The Attack of a Baltimore Mob Upon a Massachusetts Regiment; Funeral of Colonel Ellsworth in The White House. Shortly after Lincoln's, death in 1865, his papers which had accumulated in his office files through his Presidency, plus many more brought from Springfield were removed from the White House by his son. The papers that were shrouded in secrecy did not become open to the public until July 26, 1947. Mearns presents a dramatic history of the collection, exploring and explaining the origins of the legends in which it was surrounded by for eighty-two years. A selection of more than 500 vital documents of monumental a collection now in the Library of Congress. Reflecting not only Lincoln's thoughts and problems, but the inner history of the nation is like viewing the Lincoln drama from backstage.
