At 80 years of age Burroughs' describes life on his father's farm bringing to life a vivid portrait of the rural self-contained farm. Drawing on his amazing ability of observation even as a youth he tells of the day to day life where they raised their own food, made most of their clothes, and thought their own thoughts. His son Julian Burroughs writes the second half of the book with equal insights and detail. Containing various letters from Burroughs to his son, including the last one he would write, from La Jolla, California, Jany, 26 (1921). 2 color illustrations (including frontispiece of "Slabsides"), with 8 half-tone illustrations, from photographs and from paintings. John Burroughs, American Naturalists, essayist, and the most important individual in the evolution of US conservation movement, (b) Catskill Mountains, N.Y. 1837-1921. Pale green boards over dark green cloth spine. Paper title panel inset to frond board. DW in pieces, not price clipped. Tan with tree illustration, front, back and both flaps, small piece of spine with "Third Printing" on it. chips with closed edge tears, in mylar jacket.
