Various essays; founded on works of the leading historians of that time, summarizing the the most pertinent facts of Ancient and Modern History in chronological order, divided into ten distinct periods. The first includes the span time from the earliest records to the subversion of the Babylonian Monarchy; the second contains the space between the establishment of the Persian empire by Cyrus, and its overthrow by Alexander; third being the time elapsed from the reign of Alexander to the coming of Christ; and fourth begins the Christian era, and ends at the elevation of Constantine to the sovereignty of the Roman Empire; the reign of that prince, on account of its singular importance and conspicous effects, is distinctly consideredd as the fifth period; from the death of Constantine to the final subversion of empire, and continues to the reign of Charlemagne, until the 15th century, which is peculiary characterized by the revival of letters, the invention of printing, the discovery of America, extension of commerce. The ninth essay covers the age of enterprise and adventure at the middle of the 15th century to the near end of the 16th century. The tenth essay commences from that important era, and reflects the general view of modern times. John Bigland, (b?), (d) 1832, Skirlaugh at Holderness, England. He was a school master who published several valuable works on, history, natural history and geograpy. This being his first work. Brown calf boards and spine, red and gilt title panel to spine. Rubbing with surface scratches to boards, lower front hinge starting. Text very clear, with nice sized font. Mild toning of page edges, pastedown to through to title page.. Rear board has a long curved dark stain, and few others. Front hinge look worked on, closed edge tear to page 91, 1 inch, not affecting text. Mild crease to first pages through Preface. Else, clean, tightly bound. In vg+ condition. In protective archival wraps. 8 vo., 536 pp
