Six full page very clean illustrations, including Frontispiece of Gorilla Hunt, tissue covered. Originally published in 1861. R.M. Ballantyne creates a vivid African Adventure in this novel of a Wild Gorilla Hunting. Robert Michael Ballantyne, Edinburg (1825-1894), while still a young man when employed by the Hudson Bay Company, Canada trading with Indians in remote areas. His book Hudson's Bay, or, The Life In The Wilds of North America depicted his youth and adventures in the Canadian wilds. Ballanyne's most popular boys adventure was "The Coral Island," 1858. Ballantyne began to travel to sharpen his knowledge of the geography, history and culture where his exciting adventures took place. Ballantyne wrote over 80 books, and became a leading author of juvenile boy adventure books, Victorian era boys became enthralled with the idea adventure and exploration into remote areas of civilization. Missionaries, soldiers, sailors and adventurers also benefited from Balantyne's richly woven adventures. Excerpts from books, "Hereupon the monkey uttered a terrific shriek of passion, exposed all its teeth and gums, glared at its adversary like a little fiend, and seizing the branch with both hands, shook it with all its might. The result was, that not only did the coveted bunch of fruit fall to the ground, but a perfect shower of bunches came down, one of which hit Jack on the forehead, and, bursting there, sent its fragrant juice down his face and into his beard, while the parrots and all the other monkeys took to flight, shrieking with mingled terror and rage". Brown cloth boards and spine, stamped black decoration to boards, spine decorated in black and gilt. Mild rubbing of boards and extremities, spine ends bumped, slight slant to front board (very slight). Brown e.p.s, white f.e.p. has Christmas Inscription date 1872. Text very clean, tightly bound.
