J.B. Priestley (1894-1984); British journalist, novelist, playwright, and essayist. During his career Priestley published over 120 books, usually light and optimistic in their tone. His prolific production continued nearly sixty years. From the age of 70 to 84 he produced 21 books. In this volume Priestly writes a knowledgable and entertaining reflection on English Humor and humorists as he analyzes different the facets of English humor from Chaucer, Chesterton, Shakespeare, Gilbert, etc. Chapter headings include: The English Character; Clowns and Comedians; Comic Art; A Gallop and a Gossip -I; A Gallop and a Gossip - II; Three Novelists; Charles Lamb; Dickens; Shakespeare.
