1 BRYANT, ARTHUR. SAMUEL PEPYS: THE MAN IN THE MAKING.
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1933. First American edition Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dj
First volume of Pepys Trilogy. Samuel Pepys, 1633- 1701, Salisbury Court off Fleet Street, London. In this biography Mr. Bryant shows the true personality and important activities of Samuel Pepys life. Working from original sources and having at his disposal the papers of the late Dr. H.B. Wheatley and the Dr. J.R. Tanner, two most foremost Pepsian scholars of the 20th century. Bryant's engaging and racy style is well suited to portray Samuel Pepys character as an admirable loveable man, reflecting the two sides of his personality; his phenomenal rise to politcal power and his personal vulnerabilities. Pepys came from a working class family whose roots go back to the 13th century. He is best known for his personal diaries; which are historic and full of character, and his great literary achievements; which trace the record of his times, of London in the 1660's, and record the Great Fire of London and the suffering of London during the Plague, "Black Death".

Brown cloth boards and spine, black and gilt title panels to front and spine. End papers, illustrated with three maps, illustrating the life of Samuel Pepys, rear, map of London under Charles II, with a dotted line showing the area of the Great Fire. DW yellow, illustrated, flap ends squared, not price clipped. Closed 4 1/2 inch tear to front joint, same to rear flap. Various chips and closed tears. Four illustrations, plus map e.p.'s. 8 vo, 436 pp. In protective mylar jacket. No writing, clean, solidly bound. First American Edition. In protective mylar.
