Woollcott was the model for Sheridan Whiteside, the central character in The Man Who Came to Dinner, a play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. This book is one his popular gossipy essays on literary, theatrical and other well known people; Orson Wells, George Gershwin; Harpo Marx; H.G. Wells; George Bernard Shaw, etc. These anecdotes of his friends, personalities and events are a prime example of Woollcotts sharp wit and keene literary style.
