Nice First Edition in unclipped dust jacket. The historic epic biography of Alex Haley's African ancestory. As a boy in Henning, Tennessee, Haley's grandmother told him stories handed down through the generations of their family about "The African". A man across the sea who while chopping wood was dragged away in chains, beaten and taken aboard a slave ship bound for Colonial America. Haley took ten years researching and traveling until he discovered the name "the African" "Kunta Kinte" and the precise location of Juffure, the village in The Gambia, West Africa, from which he was abducted in 1767 at age 16, take aboard the Lord Ligonier to Maryland and sold to a Virginia Planter. This monumental drama of Kunte Kinte and the six generations that came after him spans two centuries. Haley was the first Black America Writer to trace his origins back to their roots and rediscover for an entire race of people the rich and fascinating cultural history of African Americans, and the horror and heartache they endured being stolen from their land.
