A novel based on a 19th century newspaper, an inside look at the departments, editors, journalists, and life of a 19th century newspaper. Thinly disguised as the story of Philadelphia newspaper editor, who later sued the author for libel. Chapters include: Editors; Qualifications, The Reporters, The City Editor, Slang, Interviews, Jenkins, Editorial Rooms, Editors Work, Book-Reviewing, Editor's Personal Characteristics, Religion of Newspaper Men, Drop Heading, The Bohemian, The Printers, Proof, Typographic Errors, A Bad Editor, My Friend George, The Bore, A Noted Libel Suit, The Gallows, Tricks of the Trade, etc. A.F. Hill, 1842-1876, Fayette County, PA. Hill was well known in his time as an editor, writer and scholar. He served as editor of the Golden City in San Francisco, asst. editor of the Philadelphia Mercury, contributor to Saturday Night , and various other literary trades. Hill also authored, and co-authored various other publications, and books. Including Our Boys, a history of the boys of the 8th Pennsylvania Reserves, from a soldiers view. He served in the Civil War in Company D of the same unit, was wounded, and lost his leg at Antietam Hill. Light green cloth, decorative gilt and black title panel to front board, with lower board decoration. Gilt title and author to spine. Spine ends bumped, mildly rubbed. Few rub spots to joints, with few mild cloth bubbles. Small chip to uper edge of e.p., with 1/2 inch closed tear. Very clean text, tightly bound.
