Limited Edition Cloth Near Fine This is copy number 128 of 500 copies, June, 1917, stated to copyright page. As WWI heated, the Mexican Revolution was still active, and border clashes continued. Both enlisted men and volunteer troops were still manning the borders, and sent on campaigns. The First Troop Philadelphia Cavalry were sent to Camp Stewart, in El Paso, Texas on July 6, 1916, after just twelve days of training at Mt. Gretna. The "Troop" consisted of 95 men and 4 officers. They endured hot, dusty, dry conditions, and limited water supply as they entrenched their army issue tents, and went through grueling army drills. "The period of training our 102 horses issued at Camp Stewart was the hardest drudgery of the year......" Despite the hardships, Brooke's 'diary' shows a courageous group of men, training and performing under harsh circumstances, with heart felt comradieri, and sense of duty. There are 51 photo reproductions, including frontispiece of the Troop officers; most are fold-out, a panaramic view of the Calvary on Parade Grounds folds out to 28 inches. There is Roster of First Philadelphia City Cavalry, Camp Stewart, El Paso Texas. The Diary is dated with each entry.
Brown cloth, yellow, white and brown paper band wraps around boards and spine, stamped gilt title, author, publisher to front board and spine.
