Standard's an expressive rendering of Richmond's culture and charm in 'The Dreamer': "Richmond was a fair and pleasant city in those days--the blight of the War Between the States had not changed the cheerful temper of its people. It was more of a large village than a town, with gracious homes standing comfortably apart, with wide verandahs overlooking sloping lawns and brilliant flower borders." Poe poem "to Helen" was written in Virginia about Poe's boyhood friend Bobby Standard's beautiful Mother.
