American, painter turned author Robert W. Chambers, (New York, 1865-1933), best known for his horror, fantasy and historical fiction. This one of his rare Children's books. The discovery of outdoors by two young young children, Geraldine and Peter, seven beautiful full page color plates by Reginald Birch. Chapters include: The Mild-weed Butterfly; The Brook Trout; The Green Frog; The Grass Snake; The Robin; The Spider. Various additional black and white illustrations around text. Lovely uncommon book. Reginald Birch, (1856 Ð 1943, British born, raised in Bronx, New York). Is best known for his illustrations of historical fiction, and Little Lord Fauntleroy, and Sarah Crew by Frances Hodgson Burnett, his illustrations appeared in most of the 19th Century Children's periodicals such as: St. Nicholas, The Youth's Companion, Harpers, Century Magazine, etc.
Color illustrated pale yellow cloth wrapping to rear board, Geraldine and Peter with an array of animals to front, illustrated spine, red title to spine, gold to front board. Pale half round stains at gutter to copyright/contents, and poem "To Bob in Springtime" and blank facing page, 3/4 inch. One inch closed side edge tear to e.p. Tissue (foxed)covered frontispiece, crack to hinge between frontispiece and title page, orange inked title. Few edge smudges to title page, some tanning to e.p.'s Very nice and clean illustrations and text in archival mylar wraps. Not paginated. First Edition, date same to title page and copyright.
